Induction training for local Councillors

We can run induction training for you. Alternatively we can train your officers to run effective training and briefing sessions.
There are many aspects of induction that we believe need to be done in-house by your own officers. For example, procedures specific to your authority should be trained by officers. But the people with the knowledge often need to brush up their presentation and training skills along the way.
Midas trainers can also work with your team to develop new and exciting training and presentation material. Writing a presentation or a training course is a different skill to presenting. It is something our top trainers do all the time, as we write all our own material.
Once the initial induction training is over we can provide a wide range of skills workshops. Our trainers come from across the political spectrum. They are able to help members develop the skills they will need to become an asset to the council.
We have a large number of existing courses written especially for local council members. Alternatively we can write a new one just for you. Let us know what course you need and we will do the rest.
If you would like to know more about our existing courses click on this link to visit to our local government web page. If you would like to contact us to talk about a brand new course or booking an existing course call us on 0845 468 0235 or email enquiries@midas-training.co.uk .
The new Values family of workshops
A council member on a recent Midas 'Values, and Work Culture in Action' workshop recently said "That was really good fun! I am so surprised - it is the first time I have ever enjoyed a workshop on this kind of topic. And our Group got so many really practical actions out of it."
The participant was talking to Midas MD Candy Piercy, who wrote the new Values family of courses.
Candy said "I am thrilled with the reaction we have had to the new Values courses. As each one is customised so closely to meet the needs of the individual clients, people get really involved. They also have a lot of fun. That makes it much more likely they will actually put into action the plans they create during the workshop.
"We have had a lot of interest in these workshops from clients in both the private and public sector. In local government these workshops can be run for officers or for the individual political groups
"Words like vision, mission and values are often tossed around in management meetings. Everyone knows they are important but are not quite sure how they fit in to their day to day work
"These courses make that connection. Our participants come out with real confidence that they can use these concepts as a positive and practical help for building future success."
Examples of course titles from the Values family of courses:
- Values in action
- Vision, mission and values
- Leadership in a values driven work culture
- Values and work culture in action
- Creating a vision and values for change

Planning matters with Chris Hill
We are delighted to welcome our new Expert Associate Trainer Chris Hill to the Midas team. He has a wealth of experience of the building and construction industry. Recently he has been advising central government and a number of local authorities on issues around partnership working and planning.
Chris is developing an exciting new course for Midas about managing planning issues. In particular he will focus on how to get the best out of working with the construction and house building industry.
This course will be of particular value to council member who are heavily involved with planning matters. It will also benefit new members who may become involved in planning issues in their own wards.
Websites of the Moment
The Cloud Appreciation Society
http://cloudappreciationsociety.org/
Candy Piercy says "I love the different shapes clouds make - I find it a real stressbuster to sit outside for five minutes and watch for the different types of clouds.
"It took me a few minutes to work out how to get the best out of this website - but it was worth it! There are some stunning photos and a description of how many of the clouds form.
"There are other things there too, sunsets, rainbows and halos around the sun. As a result I now know what a sundog is! Do have a look and I hope you enjoy this site as much as I do!"
Fungus fun for the Autumn
http://www.britmycolsoc.org.uk/resources.asp?Page=1&Cat=Fungus Groups in the UK
Autumn is a wonderful time in nature, and one of the most prolific times of year for wild mushrooms. Many people walking in the countryside naturally look up - but if you look down at your feet, you will see a myriad of colours, shapes and sizes of fungi. This link takes you to the groups that have been set up across the country to help people enjoy nature's abundance, and contribute to the mapping of the bio-diversity of the planet too!
Says Jenny Shorten, "If you don't know your puff balls from your parasols - don't worry. There is a skilled identifier on each of the walks to help you learn the difference. And quite a few of the groups end up in the pub for lunch as a bonus."
